I know I haven’t posted in a few days, but I’ve been out of town with family. I tried posting from the WordPress app, but while I was typing the app crashed and it didn’t even save a draft of what I wrote, so I didn’t try again. I will be posting the next Casabloga either later tonight or sometime tomorrow.
But in the meantime, I came across something I found interesting. I typed in bradpitt.com because I was curious what his website looked like. Turns out that not only does he not have a website, his name redirects to Paramount’s website. This led me to post a Facebook status about it (because the littlest things interest me) where I tagged the famous movie studio’s Facebook page, which led me to clicking onto their page to Like them (because regardless what I say here, I like all the major movie studios).
Before I continue, here is the cover image for 20th Century Fox’s Facebook page:
Apparently Tyler Perry made another Tyler Perry movie.
Now back to Paramount. I know that they are a creative lot, so I automatically assumed their cover image would be adverting one of their upcoming movies, most likely Anchorman 2, as it’s currently in theatres, or even Noah, which hits theatres 28 March. A friend and I actually plan to go see that. I’ve been waiting to see it since 2007, so it finally being released is really exciting to me. Anyway, Paramount decided that instead of adverting either a current or upcoming movie they will just advert…
Now, I admit that the Majestic Mountain and 100th Anniversary Earth look awesome, and you want to show them off as much as possible. But that’s why you put them in front of movies. I’m sure more people are going to watch your movies than look at your Facebook page. There’s nothing wrong with displaying your logo as the cover or profile picture, but I don’t see why two major movie studios decided to use the same picture twice on the same page. It just looks redundant.
Heck, look at Disney’s page! They chose to use their logo instead of adverting a movie, but at least they changed it up and used a different logo as the profile picture.
MGM got creative on their Facebook page. Instead of using their usual logo as a cover image or profile picture, they made two new pictures just for that purpose.
I know people will read this and go, “What’s the big deal? It’s just a Facebook page!”, and I agree. It’s just a Facebook page. But it also represents their company. If you see a small business’s Facebook page and it it had the same picture as the profile picture and cover image, you would assume they are uncreative or unprofessional. So why wou;d a major company do that? I’m sure they know that no one is going to say, “Paramount Pictures has the same picture as the cover image and profile picture! I’m never going to watch one of their movies ever again!!” That would be stupid and petty.
But still, even MSM, which has the least amount of Likes out of all the pages I showed above, got creative with theirs. If I didn’t know what MGM was and I saw that, it would make me want to find out. While the Mountain and Earth pictures look awesome, if I never heard of Paramount or Universal and I went on their pages, I would see the same image used twice and think maybe they could only afford to make the one picture, so they stretched it as far as they could.
On my own Facebook page, I used the logo of my new book as the cover, and my author logo as the profile picture.
When I am ready to publish my second novel, I will change the cover to that logo.
I just think that whether you’re a small business (or an unknown self-published author) or a multi-billion dollar company, you should take care of how you present yourself publicly. I’m not going to put a picture of myself as my profile picture on my page because to me that feels unprofessional. Likewise, I wouldn’t put my logo as the profile picture AND cover image because that just looks redundant as well as unprofessional.
If anyone at Paramount or Universal happen to come across this, I recommend using the cover image area to advert Noah and Lone Survivor.
